Stitches (laceration repair)
A cut that is too deep or too wide, or that will not stop bleeding with direct pressure, likely needs stitches. Leaving a deep wound open risks infection, poor healing and scarring.
The area is numbed first with a local anesthetic injection. The wound is then cleaned thoroughly and closed carefully, and you leave with wound care instructions and a plan for having the stitches removed.
When a cut should be checked
- It is deeper than about ΒΌ inch, or gaping open
- Bleeding does not slow after 10 to 15 minutes of firm pressure
- The edges will not stay together on their own
- It is on the face, a hand, or over a joint
- You can see fat, muscle or white tissue at the bottom
Abscess, boil and cyst drainage (I&D)
An abscess or boil is a painful pocket of pus under the skin, from a bacterial infection of a hair follicle, gland or wound. It is red, swollen, warm and throbbing. Because the infection is walled off, antibiotics alone are often not enough, and the usual treatment is to drain it.
The area is numbed completely, a small opening is made, and the infected material is drained. The wound is packed if needed, and you get aftercare instructions. Please do not try to pop or lance an abscess at home: it can push the infection deeper.
When an abscess should be looked at
- A red, warm, swollen lump that keeps getting bigger over several days
- Throbbing or pulsing pain
- A white or yellow "head" forming
- Fever, chills, or red streaks spreading from the area
Other minor procedures
- Foreign body removal (splinters, debris)
- Ingrown toenail treatment
- Burn wound care and dressing
- Skin infection treatment
- Post-procedure follow-up visits
Prices for these vary with what is needed. Ask for the price, or a written Good Faith Estimate, before treatment.
